Golden Week is a big deal in Japan. It all started in 1948.
Children’s Day (Kodomo no Hi) - villages hang carp streamers outdoors to represent the presence of young men within and to wish them strength and success in life.
Golden Week is one of the longest holiday seasons in the country. During this time, the perfect spring weather usually calls for travel and outdoor fun, especially in the mountains of Hokkaido in Niseko Village.
👉 Showa Day (Showa no Hi) - 29 April is the birthday of the late Emperor Showa, or Hirohito, who ruled Japan during World War II.
👉Constitution Day (Kenpo Kinenbi) - 3 May is celebrated in honour of the ratification of the Japanese constitution in 1947.
👉Greenery Day (Midori no Hi) - 4 May It honours the environment, as Emperor Showa was a lover of nature, flowers, and plants. At one time, Greenery Day was celebrated on April 29 but was moved to its current date due to an obscure law that requires a day falling between national holidays to be declared a holiday as well.
👉Children’s Day (Kodomo no Hi) also called Tango no Sekku, or the Boy’s Festival - 5 May is a festival in celebration of young men. Towns and families often hang carp streamers outdoors to represent the presence of young men within and to wish them strength and success in life.
We ❤️ that the celebrations include a Greenery Day to celebrate the outdoors & Children's Day to be thankful for the young'uns with koinobori (flying carp kites) displayed in parks & public spaces!
